The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce that actor and comedian Phil LaMarr will host this year’s Harvey Awards banquet and ceremony, taking place on the evening of Saturday, September 8, 2012. The Baltimore Comic-Con, which will be taking place September 8-9 at the Baltimore Convention Center, has been the home of the Harvey Awards since 2006.

Phil LaMarr is best known as a cast member of Fox’s MADtv, a sketch comedy show based on characters and situations from MAD magazine, which was found in 1952 by Editor Harvey Kurtzman (namesake of the Harvey Awards) and Publisher William Gaines. The show first aired in 1995 and ran for 14 seasons, of which LaMarr was a cast member for 5 seasons (1995-2000).

In addition to his comedic acting, LaMarr is also an accomplished voice actor for such renowned shows as Futurama, Kaijudo, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Static Shock, Evil con Carne, Samurai Jack and Justice League Unlimited, as well as recurring roles on King of the Hill, Family Guy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Young Justice and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron.

As a lifeling comics reader, LaMarr says: “I’m excited and honored to be a part of the Harvey Awards this year, and I am looking forward to meeting many of the people I spend every Wednesday afternoon with.”

The change in host this year from Harvey Award mainstay Scott Kurtz was due to a family conflict. Kurtz, a friend of both the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Harvey Awards, will return in the future. “Scott worked really hard to make the show this year, and we all understand and respect that family commitments must take priority,” said Marc Nathan, Baltimore Comic-Con promoter. “Scott is always welcome here in Baltimore!”

The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the addition of artist and creator-rights advocate Neal Adams, along with sons Josh and Jason, to the growing line-up of this year’s show. The 13th annual show will take place September 8-9, 2012 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Neil Adams’ work on such DC Comics characters as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow redefined an era of comics, bringing a photorealistic feel to the pages of their respective books.

In the late-’60s, while freelancing for DC Comics, Adams also began working at Marvel Comics on X-Men with Roy Thomas. He continued to work for DC and Marvel throughout the late-’60s and ’70s, working on The Avengers, Detective Comics, and Green Lantern/Green Arrow.  Most recently, Adams wrapped up the 7-issue second volume of Batman: Odyssey for DC Comics, and is currently handling art duties on Marvel Comics’ First X-Men, hitting stores this month.

In addition, Adams crusaded for years to secure pensions and recognition for Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, creators of Superman and, in 1978, he helped form the Comics Creators Guide. He was inducted into the Eisner Award’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999.  In 2009, during the Harvey Awards at the Baltimore Comic-Con, Neal was presented with the Hero Initiative Humanitarian Award for his charitable work.

Josh Adams, the artist for IDW’s Doctor Who series, has achieved notoriety on the Internet for his exquisitely designed Sherlock illustrations. He has worked throughout the industry for such companies as DC Comics (House of Mystery, JSA, Batman Odyssey) and Marvel Comics (Astonishing X-Men Motion Comic) as well as on Syfy shows like Eureka, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, and Alphas. A self-taught artist in sculpture and human anatomy, Jason Adams made a name for himself in the world of toy and fantasy sculpture. Working for world-renowned companies across the toy and comics fields, his professional catalog spans 20 years and his company, Spyda Creations, is his platform to create dynamic fine art sculpture.

“We are so happy have Neal, Josh, and Jason returning as guests to the show this year,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “The Adams’ are among the few dynasties in comics, along with the Kuberts and Romitas, and we are honored to host them here in Baltimore!”

Baltimore Comic-Con offers interactive Kids Love Comics Pavilion with artists, how-to’s, capes, and a diner booth!

Kids 10 and under get in free with a ticketed adult at the 2012 Baltimore Comic-Con on September 8-9 at the Baltimore Convention Center– and there will be a ton of kid-friendly comics, as well as the artists and writers who make them! Creators from such companies as Pixar, Archie, Scholastic, Disney, Simon & Schuster, Marvel, and DC will be on hand to sketch, help teach young ones about the magic of comics through mini-how to’s through the weekend, and to just say “hi,” right at the Kids Love Comics Pavilion!

The Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to announce the addition of comic legend Jim Starlin to the growing line-up of creators attending this year’s show. The 13th annual show will be taking place September 8-9, 2012 at the Baltimore Convention Center in the heart of downtown Baltimore.

Starlin began his illustrious career as a writer and artist in 1972 and made a name for himself in the industry with his universe-spanning cosmic tales and space operas at Marvel Comics. In addition to revamping Marvel’s Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock, he is also the creator of Marvel’s Mad Titan, Thanos.

Aside from creating Thanos, Starlin also co-created Marvel’s Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu along with Steve Englehart. His extensive resume includes on the DC Comics titles Detective Comics, Batman, and Legion of Super-Heroes, working on such notable story-arc as “Batman: A Death in the Family” and “Ten Nights of the Beast.”

“With the amazing success of Marvel’s The Avengers this summer, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have the creator of one of the Avenger’s most fearsome adversaries attending the show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “With Thanos set to be the next major villain in the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jim Starlin is a guest that everyone is going to want to see at the show!”

Most recently, Stalin wrote and drew the seven-issue miniseries, Breed: Book of Revelation for Image Comics and The Art of Jim Starlin: A Life in Words and Images published by IDW, both in 2011.

The 2012 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry’s most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented September 8, 2012 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot.

Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Friday, August 17, 2012. Full submission instructions can be found on the final ballot. Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. Final ballots are available for download at www.harveyawards.org. The Baltimore Comic-Con is celebrating its 13th year of bringing the comic book industry to the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. With a guest list unequaled in the industry, the Baltimore Comic-Con will be held September 8-9, 2012.

The Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to announce the addition of Pixar’s Marty Baumann as a guest at this year’s show, taking place September 8-9, 2012 at the Baltimore Convention Center in downtown Baltimore.

Marty Baumann is an artist at Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, an illustrator, graphic artist and production designer on such films as Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Mater’s Tall Tales, Planes, and many others. He also helped develop theme park installations, toy packaging, and Pixar corporate branding.

Beyond Pixar, Marty has rendered  illustrations and developed characters for toy manufacturers, magazines and newspapers, illustrated children’s books, created logos, info-graphics, Web sites, broadcast promotions, and presentation art for Hasbro, McDonald’s, HarperCollins, Chronicle Books, National Geographic, Scholastic Books, Universal Studios, Weekly Reader, Nickelodeon, and many others.

Recent Marty has worked on projects including the Carsland pavilion at Disneyland, a redesign of the classic game Monopoly, and a redesign of the Cheetos mascot, Chester the Cheetah.

Marty has created “Robot Rodeo,” a portfolio of recent work, especially for the Baltimore Comic-Con.

“Marty is such a great guest, and brings a great pedigree to the show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. “I’m so pleased to be able to provide access to such a talent to our guests.  Marty was also a guest at the first Baltimore Comic-Con so it’s great to have him back!”

The Baltimore Comic-Con is honored to officially announce that Golden Age artist Ken Bald will be making his first appearance at this year’s convention. The show will be taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center the weekend of September 8-9, 2012.

Ken Bald is one of the all-time greats, having illustrated Timely heroes including Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, Blonde Phantom, Destroyer and Miss America. Ken co-created Timely super-hero Sun Girl who had her own series in 1948, penciled the very first appearance of Namora in “The Coming of Namora” in Marvel Mystery Comics #82 (1947), and drew the sole issue featuring The Witness (1948) now featured in The Twelve.

At Fawcett, Ken penciled and/or inked Captain Marvel, Captain Midnight, Bulletman & Bulletgirl, and Spy Smasher.  For Street & Smith, Ken did fabulous work on Mandrake the Magician and Doc Savage. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Ken did numerous horror/suspense stories for American Comics Group’s Adventures into the Unknown, The Clutching Hand, Forbidden Worlds, and Out of the Night.

In 1957, Ken left comics and moved to syndicated comic strips starting with the King Features detective strip Judd Saxon. Ken is probably best known for his work on the Dr. Kildare comic strip which he drew for over 25 years, and for Dark Shadows, a strip Ken drew based on the popular television series.

The Baltimore Comic-Con is honored to officially announce that Stan “The Man” Lee will be the returning as the Guest of Honor for the second year in a row at this year’s convention. The show will be taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center the weekend of September 8-9, 2012.

Lee will only be making public appearances on Saturday, September 8, 2012, signing autographs and posing for photographs with guests in attendance of the show.

“Stan’s first appearance at the Baltimore Comic-Con was an unmitigated success last year,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Having him return for a second go-around is simply amazing and a great opportunity for those who missed him last year to meet a living legend in the comic industry!”

Known the world over as the architect of the Marvel Universe, Lee-along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko-co-created some of the most iconic characters of the Silver Age, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange.

Lee began his career in comics in 1939 at the age of 16, working for Martin Goodman at Timely Comics. He made his writing debut in 1941 with a text filler story in Captain America Comics #3 and wrote his first back-up story for the title two issues later. Lee continued to write for the publisher and, at the age of 19, was installed as interim editor. With a head for business and an eye for comics, Lee graduated to become editor-in-chief and art director of the comics division.

Throughout his illustrious career, which has spanned more than 70 years, Lee has been a writer, editor, publisher, President, and Chairman at Marvel Comics. He’s made cameo appearances in 15 films based on his creations-including this summer’s record-breaking blockbuster, The Avengers.

In October of 2011, Lee joined with 1821 Comics to the start “Stan Lee’s Kids Universe,” a multimedia comic imprint whose purpose is to produce new kids material. Most recently, he co-wrote the graphic novel, Romeo and Juliet: The War – a reimagining of the classic Shakespeare tale with a sci-fi twist-which debuted at No. 7 on the New York Times best-seller list for both the hardcover and trade paperback.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome back the biggest star in all of comics,” said Nathan. “Not only is this a real treat for us, but one for the fans planning to attend the show as well!”
