Can Godzilla and other giant monsters of the movies save the planet — from humankind? From imperialism to Oppenheimer to the oil industry, humans have proven to be the most destructive monsters of all in our pursuit of power. In this multimedia panel, superfans and scholars will screen and discuss metaphors for human-caused injustice, oppression, and environmental devastation in video clips from Daikaiju Eiga — “large mysterious creature cinema” — from around the world, with a focus on Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. These visions of dystopian destruction can hold a mirror up to humankind’s mistreatment of ourselves, other species, and the Earth. By deciphering and debating what these riveting reflections mean for the real world, we hope to provide ways of seeing plot points in these movies as “teachable moments” for all of us to make the world a better place.
